Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive in, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your ‘backstory’ and how you got started?

My journey in the IT industry, particularly with a focus on Microsoft Dynamics 365/CRM and Power Apps, started with a keen interest in technology solutions that optimize and transform business processes. The objective to leverage technology to facilitate organizational growth set a solid foundation for my career. Perhaps my initial foray into IT was driven by curiosity and the recognition of technology as a pivotal force in business innovation.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lessons or ‘takeaways’ you learned from that?

In the initial phase of my career, where I was deeply involved in customizing and implementing CRM solutions, an amusing incident happened. Eager to impress and make an impact, I devised what I thought was an innovative solution to automate customer follow-ups using Dynamics CRM workflows. The idea was to streamline communications and ensure no customer queries went unanswered.

However, due to a small oversight in configuring the workflow’s logic, instead of sending out a personalized follow-up email to customers who had interacted with the company within the last week, the system began sending emails to every single contact in the database, including those who had not been active for years. The situation turned comical when I started receiving puzzled replies from former clients and even employees, wondering why they were suddenly being thanked for their nonexistent recent inquiries!

Lessons Learned: The incident, while initially embarrassing, taught me several invaluable lessons that shaped my approach to IT projects moving forward:

Thorough Testing is Crucial: It underscored the importance of thorough testing of any automation logic in a controlled environment before deploying it live. This incident made me an advocate for rigorous testing protocols, ensuring that similar oversights were avoided in future projects.

Attention to Detail: It highlighted how small details could have significant impacts. This meticulous attention to detail became one of my strengths, enabling me to spot and address potential issues before they escalated.

Humility and the Ability to Laugh at Oneself: Perhaps the most important lesson was the value of humility and the ability to laugh at oneself. It taught me that mistakes are part of the learning process, and the ability to handle them with grace and humor is a vital skill in any profession.

Open Communication: I learned the importance of promptly communicating with affected parties to rectify the situation, a practice that has since become second nature to me in managing any project hiccups.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

A memorable instance of a mentorship happened during a particularly challenging project that involved integrating Dynamics CRM with other core business systems — a task that was crucial for enhancing customer engagement and operational efficiency but fraught with technical and strategic obstacles. Amidst this project, I encountered a significant insurmountable roadblock that threatened to delay the project timeline and impact its success.

My senior manager stepped in not only with technical guidance, but also with strategic advice on project management and stakeholder engagement. They shared their own experiences of similar challenges, highlighting the importance of clear communication, setting realistic expectations, and the strategic breaking down of complex problems into manageable tasks. This advice not only helped me navigate the project to a successful completion, but also provided me with insights into effective project management and leadership within the IT domain.

My manager’s impact went beyond just the technical mentoring aspect; he instilled in me a broader understanding of how technology intersects with business strategy, the importance of resilience in the face of challenges, and how to lead projects and teams with confidence. His support was instrumental in shaping my approach to problem-solving and project management, contributing significantly to my success in subsequent roles.

Is there a particular book, podcast, or film that made a significant impact on you? Can you share a story or explain why it resonated with you so much?

“The Phoenix Project: A Novel about IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win” by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr, and George Spafford. This novel, which illustrates the principles of DevOps and Agile practices through a narrative that’s both educational and engaging, resonates deeply with me because of several reasons:

  • Relatable Challenges: The protagonist’s journey from the brink of an IT disaster to realizing the potential of efficient IT management likely mirrored challenges I have faced in my own career. Implementing CRM solutions and leading digital transformation initiatives involve overcoming obstacles, rethinking processes, and driving change — themes central to “The Phoenix Project.”
  • Insights into IT and Business Alignment: Given my role in projects that require aligning IT strategies with business goals, the book’s emphasis on how IT can drive business success underscored the importance of my work. It provided me with additional perspectives on how to bridge the gap between technical solutions and business outcomes, a key aspect of my role as a Solution Architect.
  • Cultural Impact: The book’s exploration of organizational culture and its impact on IT effectiveness inspired me to advocate for a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and learning within teams and projects. Understanding the cultural shifts necessary for digital transformation success is crucial, and “The Phoenix Project” offers valuable insights into fostering such an environment.
  • Practical Application: The book outlines practical DevOps principles and practices, such as automation, continuous deployment, and collaboration between development and operations, which offers actionable strategies to improve your projects’ efficiency and effectiveness. These principles are particularly relevant in my work with Microsoft Dynamics and Power Apps, where agility and innovation are key.

Are you working on any new, exciting projects now? How do you think that might help people?

An Integrated Customer Engagement Platform: This platform leverages Microsoft Dynamics 365’s capabilities, along with Power Apps and Power BI, to provide a 360-degree view of customer interactions, preferences, and feedback across all touchpoints. The goal is to enable personalized customer experiences, streamline operations, and enhance decision-making through data-driven insights.

How It Helps People:

  • Enhanced Customer Experience: The platform allows for highly personalized communication and offers based on customer preferences and past interactions. This level of personalization improves customer satisfaction and loyalty, directly benefiting end-users by making their interactions with the brand more relevant and rewarding.
  • Operational Efficiency: The project reduces manual effort and operational costs by automating routine tasks and integrating disparate systems into a cohesive platform. This efficiency benefits the organization and indirectly benefits customers through faster response times and more accurate service delivery.
  • Empowering Employees: The platform provides employees with the tools and information they need to offer exceptional service. With easy access to comprehensive customer data and analytics, employees can make informed decisions, tailor their approach to meet customer needs and resolve issues more effectively.
  • Innovation and Growth: By leveraging the latest CRM and data analytics technologies, the project positions the organization to innovate continuously and adapt to changing market conditions. This helps the organization grow and ensures that customers benefit from the latest advancements in product and service offerings.

Thank you for all that. Let’s now turn to the main focus of our discussion about Digital Transformation. Digital transformation can mean many things to many people, from your perspective, how do you define digital transformation in your industry?

Digital transformation in the IT industry is a comprehensive initiative that touches every aspect of the business — from how employees work and make decisions, to how customers are engaged and served. It involves a shift in mindset as much as a deployment of new technologies, requiring leadership, vision, and a willingness to embrace change. My experiences have showcased how digital transformation is a journey, not a destination, with ongoing efforts to adapt and innovate being key to long-term success.

Which companies can most benefit from Digital Transformation?

Companies that recognize the strategic need to innovate, are willing to invest in new technologies, and have a leadership mindset that embraces change and digital adoption are the ones that will benefit the most from digital transformation efforts. Digital transformation can benefit nearly any sector — companies with outdated systems, those facing high customer expectation levels, and / or industries under pressure to improve efficiency and transparency. Experience and skills in implementing CRM and business intelligence solutions are particularly valuable in guiding these transformations.

Has integrating Digital Transformation been a challenging process for some companies? What are the challenges? How do you help resolve them?

Digital transformation presents significant challenges for many companies, including cultural resistance, skill gaps, integration complexities with legacy systems, data security concerns, lack of strategic alignment, scalability issues, and difficulty measuring ROI. My expertise in Microsoft Dynamics 365/CRM and Power App can help overcome these challenges by fostering a culture of continuous learning, providing targeted training, leveraging technical skills for smooth integrations, ensuring data security, aligning digital initiatives with strategic goals, designing scalable solutions, and establishing clear metrics for success. This approach facilitates a smoother digital transformation journey, ensuring both immediate and long-term company benefits.

Based on your experience and success, what are “Five Ways a Company Can Use Digital Transformation to Take It to The Next Level”?

In one of my projects, we utilized Power BI to analyze customer data and market trends, providing actionable insights that informed business strategies. One project involved analyzing sales data to identify underperforming products and markets, leading to targeted marketing campaigns and product adjustments that significantly improved sales figures.

4. Adopting Cloud Technologies for Flexibility and Scalability:

My involvement in migrating legacy systems to the cloud for a client not only reduced their IT costs but also increased their operational flexibility. This transformation allowed the company to quickly scale resources up or down based on demand, illustrating the benefits of cloud technology in adapting to market changes efficiently.

5. Cultivating a Digital Culture for Continuous Innovation:

At a previous organization, I initiated a series of workshops and training sessions focused on digital literacy and innovation. This program encouraged employees to explore new technologies and think creatively about solving business challenges, fostering a culture of innovation. The initiative led to several employee-driven projects that introduced new digital tools and processes, significantly enhancing the company’s innovative capacity.

These examples underscore the transformative potential of digital technologies when strategically implemented. My career illustrates how embracing digital transformation can not only solve immediate business challenges, but also position companies for sustained success and growth in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

In your opinion, how can companies best create a “culture of innovation” in order to create new competitive advantages?

Certainly, to create a culture of innovation and secure new competitive advantages, companies can:

  • Demonstrate Leadership Commitment by actively endorsing and participating in innovation initiatives.
